OUR PHILOSOPHY

Having supported some of the world's best coaches, practitioners and athletes, our team at The Complete Athlete is well-equipped to provide the support and expertise needed for you to achieve your goals. We don't just offer bespoke training programs that consider each athlete's individual needs, goals, and opportunities, but a complete holistic approach that puts you at the centre.

Our philosophy is simple: we build an effective coach-athlete partnership, underpinned by a trusting relationship. We fully understand you and your needs, and using the skills and experiences of you and your performance team, we build a plan together to support you to achieve your goals. All the time with your performance team there by your side.

Bethan Birdsey

Physiotherapist

Driven by a desire to see individuals succeed through ownership of their own outcomes, Bethan believes in empowering you by providing you with the tools and knowledge you need to achieve your goals.

​

As a qualified physiotherapist since 2009, and having worked with developing and established athletes across a range of sports, as well as extensive experience in clinic as well as in A&E, Bethan has unique skills to draw upon when supporting you in your endeavours.

​

Underpinned by strong musculoskeletal knowledge through a BSc (hons) and MSc in physiotherapy, as well as a MSc in Advanced Clinical Practice, and experience working in high performance sport science teams supporting elite and developing athletes, Bethan works with you and your coach, integrating exercises and routine into your one individualised training programme.

​

By working closely with you & your coach,  empowering you by providing you the tools you need to keep you doing what you love, Bethan aims to maximise your opportunity for training to help you achieve your goals.

​

  • BSc (Hons) and MSc in Physiotherapy, and MSc in Advanced Clinical Practice

  • Chartered Society of Physiotherapists

  • Health and Care Professions Council registered

  • Association of Chartered Physiotherapists in Sports Medicine

  • Physiotherapist for U15 and U16s England Women's football teams

  • Supported developing U16 female football players at Manchester United RTC

  • Physiotherapist for Team GB athletes at the European Youth Olympic Games

  • Physiotherapist for Welsh Squash and British gymnastics at the European Championships

  • Extensive experience in NHS and private practice, including diagnosis and management of acute injuries

  • Leading injury prevention and management strategies for athletes completing 10km, half marathons, marathons and triathlon events up to ironman distance

Dr Laurence Birdsey

Performance Coach and Physiologist

Driven by a passion to overcome challenges, and supporting individuals to grow, develop and succeed, Laurence believes in working in a partnership to help achieve your goals.

​

Having worked in Olympic sport since 2013, and closely with a wide range of athletes, including runners, triathletes and cyclists at the highest level, including World and Olympic Champions, Laurence has a wealth of experience to draw upon when working with you.

​

Underpinned by expertise in training science through a BSc (Hons), MSc and PhD in sport and exercise science, and having worked with some of the World's best sport science staff and coaches, Laurence works with you to develop and implement a highly detailed and effective training programme, tailored to you and your needs.

​

Laurence believes in a simple approach, placing you at the centre of the coach-athlete partnership, supporting you to achieve your goals.

​

QUALIFICATIONS

  • BSc (Hons) & MSc in Sport & Exercise Science

  • PhD investigating the physical demands and responses to training & competition

  • UKCC Level 2 rowing coach

  • British Cycling Level 2 Cycling Coach

  • British Association of Sport and Exercise Science (BASES) accredited sport scientist

KEY EXPERIENCES

  • Supported a 2 x World Champion triathlete from 2013 to compete at Rio 2016 Olympic Games

  • Supported athletes competing at Rio 2016 Olympic/ Paralympic Games in athletics & judo, and the physiologist for Welsh Gymnastics, Welsh Judo, & Disability Sport Wales

  • Senior Physiologist with the Great Britain Cycling Team, including coaching track endurance riders to European and World Championship medals, as well as medals at the Commonwealth Games and Olympic Games

  • Coach to UCI World Tour and Pro Continental cyclists including a Giro D'Italia stage win, top 4 at the European Championships ITT, top 10 at the UCI World Championships ITT, a UCI hour record attempt and multiple stage victories in 2.1 & 2.2 races.

  • Physiologist with Welsh Athletics, supporting developing and established international-standard athletes in a range of events

  • Performance coach to triathletes completing standard, half and ironman distance triathlons

  • Member of Cycling Ireland High Performance Management Group
